Harmony in Concept and the Birth of the Research Institue
The concept of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the 2005-2020 strategic development plan comply with the expectations of the late Fok Ying-tung, and his friend Mr. He Ming-si. Being spurred by this goal and under the auspices of the Fok Ying Tung Foundation and the Fok Ying Tung Ming Yuan Development Company Ltd., HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute was established in 2006.
By right of the unique geographic locative advantages in Pearl River Delta, the institute establishes its role and responsibility in this region. The institute will, through the use HKUST¡¯s advantages and competitive power in the related fields, develop vigorously the researching, technological and educational career, make contributions to the region¡¯s economic and technological development, further expand its influence to the industrial circle. Therefore, the enterprises use new technologies to better the products and to improve the producing process. At the same time, enterprise personnel can broaden their knowledge and upgrade their skills.
Therefore, the HKUST provides jobs, and training as well as internship opportunities to people in the region, develops local productivity, increases additional value, encourages technological innovation, and even opens up business opportunities for enterprises and entrepreneurs both in Hong Kong and the local area. This not only is good to technology transfer within the region, but also helps the regional upgrading in education, training and skill. Consequently, Hong Kong and this area are established to be knowledge-centered societies.
The institute will further go deep into the fields of research and development as well as technological development. This is not only HKUST¡¯ performance of their social and economic development duties, but also an indispensable part that helps to achieve its establishing concept.
Based upon advantages & Pursuit of excellence
In the early years of its establishment, the Institute will focus on the research in 8-12 fields in virtue of the professional advantages of HKUST Qingshui Bay campus (Hong Kong). These fields all have leading advantages in HKUST, and can benefit the social and economic development in Hong Kong and its vicinities.
We will set up a number of specialized research centers, all of which are presided mainly by the distinguished and reputed professors of HKUST. In addition to the use of the central research facilities in Nansha District, these centers will also get support from the executive teams of Nansha and Hong Kong.
With constant grandness of the team, it is expected that there will be 300 researchers, technicians, visiting scholars and postdoctoral fellows aggregated in Nansha. They will become the new force for development and application of new technologies and new materials. Besides, they will guide technology transfer, train more young scientific talents, and continuously strengthen our researching ability. Based upon the advantages, they aim to search for excellence.
